Steel Weight & Cost FAQ

How do you calculate the weight of steel?

Multiply the volume of the shape by the density of the steel grade. Mild steel (A36) has a density of 0.2836 lbs per cubic inch, or 490 lbs per cubic foot. For plate: length × width × thickness × 0.2836. For round bar: π/4 × diameter² × length × 0.2836.

How much does steel cost per pound?

A36 mild steel runs approximately $0.40–$0.55/lb. A572 Grade 50 is $0.48–$0.60/lb. 304 stainless costs $2.00–$2.50/lb. 316 stainless runs $2.80–$3.40/lb. Prices change based on mill production, demand, and tariffs. Get current pricing →

How much does a 4×8 sheet of steel weigh?

A 4×8 foot (48×96 inch) steel plate weighs approximately 326 lbs at ¼" thick, 653 lbs at ½" thick, and 979 lbs at ¾" thick. A full 1" plate weighs about 1,306 lbs. These weights are for carbon steel at 0.2836 lbs/in³.

How many pounds are in a ton of steel?

One short ton equals 2,000 pounds. In the US steel industry, pricing is quoted in short tons. Structural steel fabrication typically costs $3,200–$4,800 per ton installed →

What is the density of steel?

Carbon steel: 0.2836 lbs/in³ (490 lbs/ft³). Stainless steel: 0.289 lbs/in³. Aluminum: 0.0975 lbs/in³. These values are used in weight calculations for material ordering and fabrication estimates.
